So just what is Viral Advertising?
It's really just a way to get your story out to a heap of people by word of mouth. In other words the idea is to spread your message much like a computer virus would spread.
Catching the virus in this case though is a great thing; in this context it's people becoming aware of you and your site.
Now the actual message can be in many formats, ranging from email to videos and everything in between. The idea is to convince internet users who already have your message to send it to people they know, exponentially increasing the number of people who find your information.
First, let me make it perfectly clear that I am not advocating sending Spam out to millions of people.
Apart from the legalities of trying that, spamming is not very smart, because it's not wanted, and even if it happens to be read it's clear that going to spread is it? After all if it makes it past the spam folders and actually makes it into someone's Inbox, it's just going to get erased when and if it is read.
At this point I would suggest relevant useful content is the key. Offering great information to visitors is absolutely vital.
So how do we get internet users to do your grubby work for you? How do you convince them to do that? Spread your viral content that is.
First things first, it really needs to be something relevant and useful.
In other words it has to have real value. The visitor who has received your message has to fully believe it will give value to someone else otherwise they will not pass it on to anyone else.
One thing I have found in this industry is almighty power of joint ventures. It's a heck of a lot easier to get your message out to the masses if you have partners in the industry with large mailing lists of their own.
Let's say you have released a new e-Book. You currently have a mailing list of 2000 people who have expressed an interest or actually purchased something from you in the past.
Your product should be of course in a related niche so you feel sure you can generate a lot of interest in it from your readers so that is the first place to attack.
You will likely find that some of your list will send the email to their work colleagues if they think it's valuable.
Ahhh the power of word of mouth advertising, I tell you there is no more powerful force in advertising then getting your customers telling their family how cool, hip and fantastic you and your products are? This is a real viral marketing example in full swing.
If you can get prospects telling their family about your products and then once they invest in it and then tell their family then surely you can see that it will take only a little time at all to have a fantastic response to your sales message.
